Living on the Move: Challenges and Opportunities of Itinerant Migrants Shaping Lagos Metropolis
Abstract
Migrants in Nigeria and neigbouring Countries of West Africa in search of better life are often drawn to Lagos. However, a significant number of the influx is observed to consist of individuals who move to and from the city frequently in search of available livelihoods. This study seeks to understand the challenges and opportunities they encounter, and how their mobility shape Lagos metropolis. The paper uses mixed method of interviews and spatial mapping to understand the intersection of itinerant livelihoods and placemaking practices. It examines how itinerant migrants secure income through petty trading, waste management practices and other informal economic activities. It analysizes the spatial patterns of itineracy by highlighting temporal settlements, markets, and gathering. The study challenges the notions of migrants as passive recipients of urban services, highlighting their active roles in shaping the city's dynamism and advocating for policies that support their needs towards inclusive and equitable urban development in Lagos.
