Change by Design_Joburg: Housing Justice Action Research for Inner City Joburg

Abstract

The Change by Design_Joburg (CBD_Joburg) project represents a dynamic and multi-faceted initiative developed through collaboration between ASF-UK and 1to1, focusing on addressing critical housing justice issues within Johannesburg's inner-city areas. This collective, multi-year effort, launched in 2017, involves a diverse network of stakeholders, including academic institutions, non-profits like the Social Economic Rights Institute (SERI), and local community organizations. These entities unite to combat urban inequality and promote socio-economic rights through research, advocacy, and community-driven design and planning. CBD_Joburg employs the Change by Design methodology to facilitate action-research events and design activities that emphasize the potential of medium- to high-rise buildings for in-situ urban regeneration. Workshops focussed on area in Johannesburg’s inner city that are engaging with actors under various threats of eviction, serving as forums for inclusive and sustainable urban planning. These workshops aim to rethink urban spaces, making them more equitable and addressing the spectrum of issues from unfair evictions to inadequate housing. The initiative has not only targeted immediate housing inequities but also seeks to inspire a renewed vision for urban environments by promoting a culture of collaboration among stakeholders. The focus on co-development and knowledge exchange lays the groundwork for transformative urban redevelopment, particularly in areas characterized by high densities and robust social networks. CBD_Joburg's ongoing efforts contribute to a broader narrative of urban resilience and innovation, demonstrating the effectiveness of grassroots-led urban upgrading in fostering sustainable and just urban futures. Through this collaborative endeavor, CBD_Joburg aims to set a precedent for similar urban regeneration projects, leveraging its experiences to advocate for sustainable city growth and equitable urban planning.
