Under the title **‘Urban Management Across Continents'**, the Wits-TUB-UniLag Urban Lab held its first joint online summer school on the 14th and 15th of December 2021. A total of 33 master students from the Urban Management courses at **TU Berlin (Germany)**, **Wits University (South Africa)** and the **University of Lagos (Nigeria)** and twelve lecturers from all three institutions came together for the occasion. To open the event **Astrid R. N.** Haas of the African Development Bank held a keynote speech on **'Achieving the Promise of Cities That Work’**, which was followed by a lively discussion on her input. Main element of the summer school were the nine thematic panels with the Master student’s presentation and discussion of their thesis work. On day 1, the panel’s themes included **‘Transport & Mobility’**, **‘Land Governance’**, **‘Human Settlements & Service Delivery’** as well as **‘Private Sector Development & Building’**. The first day was concluded by plenum discussions on the presented topics and feedback from experienced researchers. On day 2, students got to share their research experience in panels ranging from **‘Spatial Inclusion & Community’** and **‘Environmental Management’** to **‘Policy & Governance’**. The second day was concluded by a networking session that enabled students to build connections among peers with similar research interests.

The speakers **Prof Gabriele Bammer** and **Prof Ayo Ojebode** discusses issues of: (1) ‘How postgraduate students can co-produce research with key stakeholders?’, (2) ‘How can postgraduate students communicate effectively with core stakeholders before data collection stage and after?’, (3) ‘How can postgraduates convert their research to policy briefs and other non-academic outputs?’.

Digital Teaching Workshop by the Wits-TUB-UniLag Urban Lab

Following the **'Effective and Engaging Digital Teaching'** webinar, Wits-TUB-UniLag Urban Lab hosts an interactive workshop on **'Hybrid Teaching / Learning‘**. Facilitator **Miné de Klerk**, is responsible for Stellenbosch University's hybrid learning strategy. Her team promotes innovative, pragmatic and research-informed approaches to the design and facilitation of online and hybrid learning.

In an effort to respond to the challenges of virtual learning in the university environment the Wits-TUB-UniLag Urban Lab brought experts **Miné de Klerk** and **Dr Ian Moll** together to demonstrate approaches to effective and engaging digital teaching, with discussion from academics across the globe following two short presentations.

Effective and Engaging Digital Teaching

**Wendy Willems** (London School of Economics) and **Thomas Bartoschek** (University of Münster) gave inputs and shared their experiences with research on and in the digital realm. **Dr Wendy Willems** provides an input on **‘Researching Digital Publics in/and Urban Space’**. She is an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics and Political Science. **Dr Thomas Bartoschek** (University of Münster) contributes on the topic of **‘Open Data for Sustainable Cities’**. He is a research associate at the Institute for Geoinformatics at the University of Münster. 

Building Practical Research Skills: Research Ethics in the Digital Realm

The Urban Management masters program established under the Urban Lab project at University of Lagos was inaugurated.

**Marie Huchzermeyer** offers a talk on what to consider when drawing a journal article from your thesis work, and working towards a review paper based on your literature review. **Sophie Oldfield** shares her view on how to get your article published in a high impact journal from an editor’s perspective.

An Introduction to Academic Publishing

The event brings together practitioners and academics to discuss the intersect between cities and social justice. Panelists include **Guilermo Delgado**, adjunct researcher at the department of land and property sciences and program coordinator in the Integrated Land Management Institute (ILMI) at Namibia University of Science and Technology;** George Onatu**, part of the AAPS steering committee and the department of town and regional planning at the University of Johannesburg; **Tobias Kuttler**, urban mobility expert and researcher at mobil. **LAB doctoral research group** and **Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri**, executive director of Spaces for Change, human rights lawyer and citizen engagement activist.
